HOW TO DRESS ON HOLIDAY IN DUBAI

Have you considered a holiday in Dubai? When the temperatures drop in the UK, many Britons start dreaming of warmer climes. For those looking to escape the chill and soak up some much-needed sunshine, Dubai has become a winter sun favourite. Dubai’s weather remains warm between October and February, offering a welcomed escape from the grey gloom of winter here. With daily temperatures averaging around 25°C, it’s the perfect time to top up your vitamin D and combat seasonal depression.

If you have never visited you might wonder: what’s appropriate to wear in Dubai? Here are a few tips for when you’re packing your suitcase for your winter sun getaway.

ARE THERE DRESS CODE RULES TO CONSIDER WHILE ON HOLIDAY IN DUBAI?

Dubai is a Muslim country. It is, however, one of the more liberal in the region, especially when it comes to accommodating tourists. While you may see many local women wearing a hijab or an abaya, female tourists are not required to cover their heads. There is no expectation for non-Muslim women to wear a hijab, even in most public areas like malls or restaurants.

However, that doesn’t mean you can dress as you would on a beach in the South of France. Modesty is key when you’re out and about in public spaces in Dubai. While there’s no need for head coverings, female tourists should still be mindful of the local customs and traditions. This generally means covering your shoulders and knees. Loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in a breathable material is an excellent choice for staying comfortable while respecting local culture. Long skirts or trousers paired with light blouses, maxi dresses, or loose shirts are all perfect options to keep cool while ensuring you’re dressed with their customs in mind.

It’s important to note that while the local culture is very tolerant of tourists, dressing conservatively in public spaces is a sign of respect. If you’re planning on visiting religious sites or older parts of Dubai, it’s a good idea to carry a scarf or shawl with you, just in case.

CAN I WEAR A BIKINI WHILE IN DUBAI?

Yes, you can wear a bikini in Dubai. Yet, there are some restrictions to consider. When you’re at the beach or lounging by the hotel pool, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a bikini or swimwear of your choice. Many of the hotels in Dubai cater to tourists. They have private beaches where swimwear is the norm. You’ll find women wearing bikinis, one-pieces, and a variety of beachwear without issue in these environments.

However, swimwear is only appropriate for the beach or pool area. Once you leave these designated zones, you’ll need to cover up. This means that if you’re heading into the hotel from the beach or walking through public areas, you should wear a cover-up, such as a kaftan or sarong, over your swimsuit. It’s also a good idea to pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals for walking between the beach and the hotel.

Under no circumstances should swimwear be worn in public places like shopping malls, markets, or city streets. Inappropriate clothing outside beach resorts can attract unwanted attention and could lead to being asked to leave certain areas, or in extreme cases, a fine.

In conclusion, if you are worried about what to wear while on holiday in Dubai, you can rest assured that the country is openly tolerant and doesn’t set any strict outfits for visitors. Dubai inhabitants are also aware of cultural differences and many have no issues with the way Western tourists choose to dress, as long as they are respectful of the local culture.
