7 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR FRONT DOOR MORE SECURE

Want to burglar-proof your front door? From upgrading the lock to adding lighting above the door, there are a few different measures that you can take to improve the security of a front door. This post outlines 7 different security upgrades that could be worth considering.

UPGRADE THE LOCK

Start by considering the lock itself. Does it look like a very old lock? If so, it could be easy for an experienced burglar to bump or pick. You should also consider getting a new lock if the current lock is loose, sticky or hard to turn. Try to choose a modern high security lock, such as a BS3621 – this lock will ward off most burglars and will be covered by all home insurers. For minor lock damage on a modern lock, lock repair may be all that is necessary.

INSTALL A SECURITY BAR

Security bars can make a door significantly harder to force entry into by providing an extra layer of security. These are typically made from steel and come in adjustable telescopic designs to fit different doorways. Some homeowners find them a bit of an inconvenience, but in areas where burglaries are common, they can be worth installing.

REINFORCE THE FRAME

Weak door frames can also make your front door vulnerable. Door jamb reinforcement kits can be worth investing in if you want to add some extra security – these kits can help to strengthen areas like the lock and deadbolt areas of the jamb.

SECURE THE HINGES

Weak hinges on a front door can also be an invitation for a burglary. Start by checking that the hinges are in good condition – replace hinges if they are rusty or worn. When choosing screws, consider long structural (3-inch+) screws. Such long screws are designed to go deep into the frame so that a door cannot be easily ripped off its hinges. You can also consider security hinges with non-removable pins.

ADD A PEEPHOLE OR VIDEO DOORBELL

When someone knocks on your door, a peephole can allow you to see who is on the other side. This is useful if you want to keep certain people out. An even more useful feature for seeing who is at your front door is a video doorbell. These can be viewed on your smartphone, allowing you to monitor the entrance of your home from any location, and you can even speak through them to warn people to get away from your property.

INVEST IN A BURGLAR ALARM

Burglar alarms are activated every time you leave your property and close your door. If someone tries to break through the door, the alarm goes off, alerting neighbours of a break-in. You can also buy burglar alarms that send an alert to your phone, so you can know if someone is trying to break into your home while you are not there.

LIGHT IT UP

A simple way to deter burglars from your front door is to illuminate your entrance. Most burglars will break into a property’s front door at night, and will selectively choose properties that are not lit up. Exterior lighting can scare burglars away by making it much more difficult to break in undetected. A battery-operated motion-sensing light could be an economical solution.
