FAMILY STAY AT THE RELAIS IN HENLEY-ON-THAMES

Our family trip to Henley-on-Thames was rejuvenating on so many levels. We love living in a country with four seasons. This means travelling and exploring during winter, too. The Relais Henley Luxury Boutique hotel makes the perfect base for exploring the Oxfordshire countryside. Situated beautifully and conveniently opposite Henley Bridge, with breathtaking views of the River Thames. This not only makes for an ideal stay for families, but their lovely rooms are also inviting for couples looking for a romantic getaway year-round.

AD/Press stay

Waking up to tranquil scenes of the fog rolling in over the hills as the rowing crews take to the river was an experience in itself. Whatever time of year you visit, I can see this being a fascinating start to the day or a lovely view to finish with before settling down to sleep.

THE RELAIS LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL

Originally The Red Lion, this historic building dates back to the 16th century and has played host to an array of royals and celebrities. Today, it’s renamed The Relais Henley and takes pride in its rich history, fantastic riverside location, and welcomes guests for a truly relaxing and calming stay. Each of their 40 rooms is individually designed, blending a rowing club spirit with botanicals from the English countryside.

The family rooms are spacious, and the beds were truly comfortable. We all sleep very well here. The staff were welcoming from the start and ensured we had everything we needed.

Located next to St Mary’s Church with its attractive 16th-century tower made of stone and knapped flint, it’s known for dominating the town’s skyline. From here it’s an easy stroll up to the town centre where you’ll find everything you need from homely pubs, restaurants, shops and museums.

The Relais Henley Hotel invites calm and relaxation. From the option of nourishing smoothies, in-room wellness with guided meditation, to revitalising walks along the river. You can also rent bikes through the hotel if you prefer to explore on two wheels.

DINING IN THE CLIPPER RESTAURANT

The Clipper is the hotel’s gorgeous restaurant. We dined here on our first evening, and the food was exquisite. Prepared with high-quality produce and very well-cooked. The seasonal menu offered a good variety without being overwhelming. Especially the chicken liver parfait starter, pork belly main and gorgeous cheese board dessert all stood out as real highlights of the wintery evening menu.

Breakfast is also served in The Clipper restaurant. From a continental-style buffet with fresh pastries, cereal, delicious chia pudding and yoghurts with berries to a menu of hot cooked breakfast, you’ll start your day refuelled. Caspian said the croissants were the best he’s ever had, and they were indeed perfectly flaky and scrumptious.

OFFERS FROM CAFE LUXE AND LUXE BOATING

If you are keen to see Henley from the water, Luxe Boating can sort out a private river cruise. They have provided beautiful boats for many film and TV productions, including James Bond movies. Operating out of Cafe Luxe, which is situated within The Relais Hotel, they can help with everything needed.

If you want to stay on dry land, then we highly recommend Afternoon Tea in the beautiful surroundings of the cafe. Here you find a menu of homemade cakes, hot chocolates and champagne. You can enjoy it all with a view of the river.

FAMILY ADVENTURES NEAR THE HOTEL

The old town of Henley-on-Thames has a rich history and has been voted one of the most beautiful English cities several times over the years. From quirky shops to historic landmarks, there’s so much to explore on a walk around town. Not to mention the captivating riverside location, which lends itself to walking or biking.

A short drive from The Relais Henley, you’ll find Stove Park Manor. A historic country house, deer park, and garden located in a valley in the Chiltern Hills, which is also home to Tumblestone Hollow. A developed hobbit-style playground with so much for children to do. They are generally open to the public during school holidays, so book a visit if you are near Henley then.

ADVENTURE GOLF AND MILL MEADOWS PLAYGROUND

Another great family-friendly activity is the nearby Adventure Golf course. Located by the river, it was a tremendous hit with the boys. They had a lot of fun competing, and we were so pleased that they are open on weekends during the winter season. I loved the fact that you are essentially playing within the most famous landmarks of Henley-on-Thames, and after our city stroll the previous day, the boys could spot many amongst the replicas. The course is well kept, and prices start at £7 per child per round or £29 for a family of four.

Right next to the mini golf course, you’ll find Mill Meadows Adventure playground. Situated less than a 10-minute walk from The Relais Henley and with a view of the river, it’s a wonderful place for children to explore. The zip line was the biggest hit with the boys, and we stayed and enjoyed it all for a good hour. It’s free and well-maintained. If you are planning a walk along the river, this makes for a nice pitstop on the way back to the hotel.

Mill Meadows Park has received the Green Flag Award – an international mark of quality for the past 12 years. Even in winter, there’s a lot to take in here, making it ideal for a family stay in Henley-on-Thames. The winter cold shouldn’t stop you from getting outdoors, and while it was mild for January when we visited, as long as you dress appropriately, you can enjoy it all, no matter the season. Afterwards, you can always return to the comfort and warmth of The Relais hotel.
